Receiving sets the accuracy of everything downstream. Get it right at the dock and picking, counts and invoices all get easier. A few habits make the difference.
The habits that matter
- Receive against the PO, not from memory — it keeps supplier, stock and Finance in step
- Count before you sign, not after — the truck leaving is the wrong time to find a shortfall
- Record damage and shortfalls as you go — a note now saves a dispute later
- Putaway promptly — stock stuck on the dock is stock the system can’t find
A good receiving routine
- PO open before the truck is unloaded
- Physical count matches what you record
- Damage and shortfalls noted on the GRN
- Goods moved to putaway, not left on the dock
